Hot Enfleurage
This method was also used since ancient times and is more suitable for flowers such as roses, lavender, neroli, or other robustly fragrant plants. THIS METHOD IS NOT SUITABLE FOR DELICATE FLOWERS SUCH AS JASMINE OR TUBEROSE!!!
Things you will need:
1. Heat source+Pan
2. Some sort of fat that remains solid at room temperature (such as lard, shea butter, vegetable shortening)
3. A large quantity of plants (have at least 15 flowers)
4. A spoon to stir and scoop out plant material
5. Cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer
Process:
1. Heat your fat until it becomes a liquid.
2. Add as much plant material as you can and still have it covered by the fat.
3. Once this has wilted and changed colour, remove it and add more. (BE CAREFUL OF THE FAT! HEAT CAN MAKE THE FAT POP, GURGLE, AND SHOOT OUT OF THE PAN!)
4. Repeat numbers 2~3 until the fat is saturate with the smell.
5. Once you have reached your desired saturation, strain the fat through a fine cloth or fine mesh strainer to remove excess fat and flower pieces.
6. Allow the liquid to cool.
7. If you want to make this into an absolute then just like the cold enfleurage, soak your extract fat in ethyl alcohol for a few days (2~4 days) and keep in a cold place like a refrigerator. while constantly pressing and stirring the mixture every 12 hours (to squeeze any of the liquid out of the fat since in cold temp. becomes solid and separates from the alcohol+fragrance mixture). For perfume, just separate the fat away from the liquid. The liquid is your perfume. The fat, on the other hand, can be used for soap.
8. If you follow all of my steps, you should have wonderful smelling materials!
